Counseling Department » Mission Statement
Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center has a guidance department that believes in helping the whole child. Its counselors all subscribe to the belief that all children are able to learn and encourage the students to use the many resources the school has to offer, including counseling services, tutoring services and activities/clubs the student can join. If there are personal issues that are interfering with success in school, the counselors invite the students to share their problems so that goals can be set and ultimately reached with guidance. The different learning styles are recognized among students, and when there are obvious difficulties in class, the counselors arrange meetings with teachers and students to help mediate problems. Accordingly, not only academic and postsecondary plans are the domain of Von Steuben's counselors, but also personal/social issues are addressed if the student comes to the counseling office seeking help.

The official mission statement says that "the mission of Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center is to educate students in a diverse, safe and nurturing environment through a challenging science program that stimulates life-long learning, problem-solving, self-esteem, and strives to prepare them to pursue college programs in various fields with emphasis on careers in science, mathematics, engineering, and medicine."
Von Steuben's responsibility to support this mission is in the nurturing and academic support that students need to be successful.

Regarding No Child Left Behind legislation and educational reform, Von Steuben embraces all children with different learning styles, learning disabilities or other special needs who are willing to engage in a challenging academic environment. The counseling department encourages and supports all students regardless of special needs, always guiding them to take responsibility for their own actions and helping the students recognize their part in becoming successful students.
